WHO guidelines
The WHO website provides information on how Covid spreads between humans and includes updated recommendations for risk mitigation and ventilation.
It focuses on airborne transmission and downplays contact transmission (through touching objects). This is in line with a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) research finding, where current evidence suggests that transmission from contaminated surfaces does not contribute significantly to infection.
WHO’s updated ventilation recommendations set ventilation rates of: 160 liters per second per patient in healthcare settings and 10 liters per second per person in non-residential indoor environments.
Airborne infection
The virus can be spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small fluid particles when they cough, sneeze, talk, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols.
Current evidence suggests that the virus is mainly spread between people who are in close contact with each other, typically within 1 meter (short range).
The virus can also spread in poorly ventilated and/or crowded indoor environments where people spend extended periods of time. This is because aerosols remain suspended in the air or travel further than 1 meter (long range).
